Who can take the IAM’s Advanced Driving Test?
Anyone who has held a full UK driving licence for more than three months can prepare for the test. If you have a court case for a driving offence pending or more than eight current penalty points however you may have to defer taking the test. Our Group Contact can provide more specific information if needed.
Are there any age restrictions?
No, providing a full UK licence has been held for more than three months.
What vehicle can I take the test in?
Any non commercial vehicle provided it is taxed, insured and has an MOT Certificate if required. Restrictions may apply to vehicles not fitted with seatbelts or a passenger seat. Please ask if this applies in your case.
How long does the test take?
You should allow two hours in total. This includes a period for de-briefing. You will find a fuller explanation under About the Advanced Driving Test.
How long will it take to get to test standard?
This depends on a number of things, not least the amount of opportunity you have to practice. Initially you join the Group as an Associate for six months and this should normally be long enough. Your Group Associate membership can be extended in most cases (for an additional fee) if you have attended regularly and need slightly more time.
Where do I go for my training?
You will find the general details under Our Associate Scheme. On joining the Group you will be invited to one of our two Centres, currently at Bromley and Orpington. It is not possible to choose, as invitations are based on availability. Each Centre has a Manager who will deal with any specific issues and monitor your progress towards the test.
What is the relationship between the Group and the IAM?
Although affiliated to the IAM, the South Eastern Group of Advanced Motorists is an independent body. It is a Registered Charity (No.1049496) run by a Management Committee elected by its members annually. All full Group members (those who have passed the IAM Test) have also to be members of the IAM.
